As of August 2026 we do real diesel ECU work — checksum repair at $100 on the EDC17 family, OE programming sessions from $100 to $250, salvage and swap recovery — and we do not provide DPF, EGR, SCR, DEF or any other emissions delete, at any price, for any customer. That is not a negotiating position and it is not squeamishness. It is the same answer we give in person, and putting it on a page saves everybody a phone call.
Diesel is the corner of this trade where the honest shops and the loud ones are easiest to tell apart, because roughly half the search demand around “diesel ECU tuning” is for something no United States business can lawfully sell. So this post does two things: it lays out precisely which diesel operations we perform and at what status, and it explains what to do instead when a delete is what you were told you needed.

Every status in that table comes from our published coverage matrix, which carries a separate IMMO-OFF status and checksum status for each variant. The EDC17 line is the one to read carefully: checksum is Live, IMMO-OFF is Soon. Those are different operations on the same module and it is entirely normal for one to be finished while the other is not. Why the refusal, in plain commercial terms
Section 203(a)(3) of the federal Clean Air Act addresses tampering with emissions controls and the manufacture or sale of defeat devices. The EPA's enforcement programme has treated aftermarket defeat devices for vehicles and engines as a standing national priority, and the enforcement has landed on tuners, parts sellers and installers — not only on manufacturers. A calibration file is a product. Selling one whose purpose is disabling an emissions control is selling a defeat device, and no disclaimer at checkout converts it into something else.
There is a second, less discussed reason, and it is the one that matters to a shop owner. A business that sells deletes cannot publish an honest coverage matrix, cannot take card payments through mainstream processors indefinitely, and cannot survive being the named vendor in somebody else's enforcement action. We would rather be the boring option that is still here next year.

What to do instead, when a delete is what you were quoted
Nearly every delete request we receive starts from a real, fixable fault. The customer has a truck in limp mode, a dash full of warnings, and a quote from somewhere that solves it by making the car stop measuring. Here is the honest sequence.
- Read the codes properly and understand them. A diesel aftertreatment fault is often downstream of a sensor, a wiring problem or a stuck valve rather than the expensive component itself. - Rule out the cheap causes before the expensive ones. Differential-pressure sensor and its hoses, temperature sensors, a DEF quality or level sensor, a failed heater, chafed harness. These fail far more often than the parts they report on.
- Use the OE procedure the manufacturer actually provides. Forced regeneration, aftertreatment resets, injector correction-code programming after replacement, and calibration updates are all normal service operations that factory software performs. That is exactly what a remote OE programming sessionis for — $100 on GM, $150 on Ford, Nissan and Mazda, $250 on Toyota, Volvo, VW/Audi and Mopar.
- Replace the failed component and program it in. Replacing an emissions component is a repair. Removing one is tampering. The line is not blurry.
There is a third possibility worth naming: sometimes the module itself is the fault. A stored internal-performance code on the ECU is not an aftertreatment problem at all, and no calibration fixes hardware. Diesel modules and the read problem
The practical obstacle on modern diesel work is rarely the calibration — it is getting a complete, trustworthy read in the first place. EDC17-generation modules are TriCore-based, the protection varies by revision, and the same badge on the fender tells you almost nothing about what is inside.
Three access routes exist, and which one applies is a per-module fact rather than a per-brand one. OBD is the cheapest and the most limited; bench needs the module out and powered on a harness; boot mode needs the case opened and the microcontroller put into a different state. There is also a hard wall on some late modules, and it is not a pricing problem. Where firmware is cryptographically signed, an unsigned modification is simply rejected by the bootloader — no vendor patches around that, and any who claim to are describing something else. Checksum repair: the legitimate diesel service people miss
The most common paid diesel job on our file side is not glamorous. Somebody has modified a calibration for a lawful purpose — preparation work, a motorsport application, a correction after replacing hardware — and the module now refuses the file because the internal checksums no longer agree with the content.
On the EDC17 and MED17 families we handle that with CRC32, ADD32 and ADD16 block detection, and it is a Live service at $100. It is also a service where the correct answer is sometimes “you do not need us”: a competent tuner corrects checksums as part of their own delivery, and if yours does not, that is worth asking about before you pay twice. What we will not do is repair the checksums on a file whose purpose is a delete. The operation would be trivial for us and refusing it costs us money; we refuse it anyway, because knowingly finishing somebody else's defeat device is participating in it.
Red flags on a diesel vendor
- The word “delete” anywhere in the product list, however it is dressed up — “off-road only” stamped on a checkout page is marketing, not a legal shield, for the seller.
- Coverage claimed by brand rather than by module. “All Duramax” is not a coverage claim. A part number, a software version and a stated operation is.
- No original file returned, or no hash for it. If they will not hand back your untouched read with a checksum you can verify, you have no way home.
- A price with no access line items. Unlock, read and checksum handling are real costs; a quote that omits them is incomplete rather than cheap. The anatomy is in our fair-price breakdown.
- No stated remedy when a write fails. Ask what happens if the module bricks, in writing, before you send anything. More of these questions are in our provider red-flags guide.
If your diesel job is outside what we do
Two honest outcomes exist and neither is a sales pitch. If the operation is lawful but we have not built it — a Delphi DCM job, an EDC17 immobilizer patch while that line still reads Soon — post it on our specialist network. Posting is free, operators with different tooling bid, and you pay only if you accept a bid. If the operation is a delete, no one on that network is taking it either, and the answer stays no.
We do not provide emissions defeat, delete files, or services intended to bypass emissions laws. Our services exist for tuning preparation, diagnostics, repair, motorsport, and off-road use where legally permitted. Customer is responsible for confirming legal use in their location and application.
The lawful diesel calibration work people actually mean
Strip out the delete requests and a real body of legitimate diesel calibration work remains. It is worth naming, because “we do not do deletes” gets misheard as “we do not do diesel.”
- Preparation and restoration work. Getting a module readable, correcting checksums after a lawful modification, and returning a module to known-good content are all ordinary services with nothing controversial in them.
- Post-repair programming. Injector correction codes after replacement, calibration updates the manufacturer has published, module configuration after a swap. Factory software does these and a remote session is how you reach it without owning eight subscriptions.
- Dedicated off-road and competition applications. Genuinely off-highway equipment sits in a different regulatory position from a truck that is registered and driven on public roads. The distinction is the vehicle's actual use, not a checkbox on an order form, and the burden of that distinction sits with the customer.
- Diagnostics. Reading a module to understand what it is doing is not modification at all, and it resolves more diesel complaints than any file ever does.
What unites these is that none of them require an emissions control to stop functioning. That is the whole test, and it is a clearer line than the marketing in this segment suggests.
Inspection and resale: the cost nobody prices in
Two practical consequences follow a delete around for years, and both land on the owner rather than the shop that sold it.
The first is inspection. Many states run emissions testing that includes reading readiness monitors and stored codes over OBD, and a truck whose aftertreatment has been removed and masked in software has to keep passing a test it is designed to fail. That is a recurring problem, not a one-time purchase.
The second is resale. A modified truck is worth less to any buyer who intends to register it in a testing jurisdiction, and putting the hardware back is dramatically more expensive than never removing it — aftertreatment components are not cheap parts, and a vehicle that has run without them for years is not always a straightforward restoration.
Reversing a software delete has its own catch. Many modules record a flash counter that survives being written back to stock, so “we will just flash it back before I sell it” is a less complete reset than people expect.
