On a VAG car built before roughly 2005, a swapped engine module is a $100 file problem. On one built after, it is a $250 session problem — and no file in the world substitutes. The dividing line is component protection: a scheme where modules verify they belong to this vehicle and refuse to cooperate otherwise. It is not the immobilizer, it is not defeatable by patching, and it is the single most common reason a VW or Audi module swap stalls halfway.
This guide covers what component protection actually is, where the era boundary falls across our own coverage, which route each side of that boundary takes, and what to do when you land on a module that is genuinely out of reach.
Component protection is not the immobilizer
People use the terms interchangeably and they are different mechanisms solving different problems.
The immobilizerstops the engine running unless a valid key is present. It is a theft deterrent aimed at the person in the driver's seat.
Component protectionstops a module functioning unless it has been adopted by the specific vehicle it is fitted to, using manufacturer software with an online authorisation step. It is aimed at the parts market — a stolen or salvaged module moved into another car is inert until the process is completed properly.
The practical consequence is that removing an immobilizer check does not clear component protection, because they are separate gates. A car can pass the first and still sit there with a protected module refusing to play. That is why “I bought an IMMO-OFF file and it still does not work” is a recurring enquiry on later VAG platforms, and the answer is that the file was never the right product.

Read that table top to bottom and the trajectory is unmistakable. The 1.8T-era modules are Live or Beta for immobilizer work. Every family after them is Soon or Manual. That is not an accident of our development priorities — it is the industry-wide hardening curve arriving, and it is the same story told in our signed-bootloader explainer.
The old side: ME7, and why the EEPROM matters
On the MK4, MK5, B5 and B6 platforms of roughly 1998 to 2005, the immobilizer secrets live in the module's EEPROM — a 95040 or 95080 chip — rather than in the main flash. That is why our universal ME7 entry is defined against the EEPROM with automatic layout detection, and why the flash-side variant sits separately at Soon.
It also explains the most common rejected read we see on this platform. A diagnostic-port read that returns only the flash is the wrong file for this operation, because the data the patch needs was never in it. The new side: what an ODIS session does
For anything on the protected side of the line, the route is a booked remote session at $250using ODIS — the manufacturer's own software — covering software updates, module coding, adaptation, and component protection across VW, Audi, SEAT and Skoda.
You plug a J2534 pass-through device into the car. A USB-over-network bridge presents it on our workstation as though it were local. We run ODIS against your vehicle with a video call alongside. Sessions run 9 AM to 9 PM Central, seven days, earliest slot thirty minutes out. Check the device compatibility matrix before booking, because an unsupported pass-through is the most common and most avoidable reason a session cannot start.
Two things worth knowing before you commit:
- Component protection has an online authorisation step by design. It is not a local calculation someone can do from a lookup table, and a provider promising an instant offline removal for a flat fee is describing something other than the manufacturer process.
- Battery support is not optional. A maintainer or a proper supply, never a charger. These cars keep a lot of modules awake during a programming event and voltage sag mid-write is how a routine job becomes a replacement module.
A European-specialist technician summarised the customer conversation better than we could:
“Everybody wants the file because the file is a hundred dollars and the session is two-fifty. Then they buy the file, it does exactly what it says on the tin, and the car still does not run, because the car was never asking that question. Simos PCR2.1 — the honest dead end
Some modules are not a matter of development time. Simos PCR2.1 is listed in our catalog as Manual on both operations, and the note reads: RSA-signed, not supported.
That is a cryptographic barrier rather than a difficulty. The module verifies a manufacturer signature before accepting a write, and producing a valid signature without the private key is not a skill problem. No amount of experience, tooling or money changes that answer, and any provider claiming otherwise is either describing a different module or describing something that will not work.
We list the gap families deliberately so that the fingerprinter recognises them and declines, rather than attempting an operation it cannot complete. Upload a PCR2.1 read to the variant identifier and you get told it is Manual, for free, before any money moves.
Where Simos18 actually helps
The MQB-era Simos18 entry is a useful illustration of how these two statuses coexist. IMMO-OFF is Soon; checksum recovery is Live. So if a tuner returned a modified file that the tool refuses to write, or that writes and then will not boot, that is squarely in scope at $100— while the immobilizer operation on the same module is not available.

A sequence that avoids the expensive mistakes
- Identify the module before buying anything. Photograph the label, note the hardware number, and if you have a read, upload it to the identifier. Year, make and model are not enough on this manufacturer — the same model year spans multiple module families.
- Establish whether component protection is in play. If the vehicle is late enough to have it and the module came from another car, plan for a session. Budget for it up front rather than discovering it after a file purchase.
- Prefer the clone where it is possible.If the original module can still be read, copying its identity into the donor keeps the vehicle's security intact and sidesteps several of these problems at once. The trade-offs across all seven operation types are in our operations decision guide.
- Read twice, diff, and keep the original read-only with its hash stored beside it, per the backup guide. This is the step with no recovery path.
- If the answer is Soon or Manual, do not ship. Post it on the specialist network instead — free to post, operators with different tooling bid, and payment is escrowed until you confirm completion.
Compliance and standards
We do not provide emissions defeat, delete files, or services intended to bypass emissions laws. Our services exist for tuning preparation, diagnostics, repair, motorsport, and off-road use where legally permitted. Customer is responsible for confirming legal use in their location and application.
This is stated with particular emphasis on VAG diesel platforms, where the requests concentrate. Coding a replacement module so it functions in the vehicle it is fitted to does not alter fuelling, ignition timing, boost or any emissions monitor, and does not affect readiness — it is ordinary repair, distinct from the tampering and defeat-device conduct addressed by section 203(a)(3) of the federal Clean Air Act. We decline delete files outright.
The interface standard the remote session depends on is SAE J2534, and the National Automotive Service Task Force maintains the industry channel through which independent shops obtain service information and vehicle-security credentials — the formal recognition that module programming belongs outside the dealer network too.
The short version
