If you have tried to read a modern Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep or Ram PCM and your tool came back with a partial dump, a protection error, or a file that clearly isn't the whole module, you've met the GPEC family. As of July 2026 the fix is a file unlock — $150 on an uploaded read, or $250 mail-in if you don't own bench hardware — and it takes seconds once the read is in hand.

What GPEC means

GPEC is the Global Powertrain Electronic Control family used across the FCA / Stellantis lineup. Successive generations — GPEC2, GPEC2A, GPEC3, GPEC4, GPEC4LM and GPEC5 — differ in silicon, protection scheme, and how much of the module a third-party tool can reach. The practical difference from an older Bosch or Siemens module is protection posture. On a 2003 Bosch ME7 you attach to the EEPROM and read it. On a GPEC2A, the module will not simply hand over its contents to a generic pass-thru — the read has to come from a bench or boot-mode tool, and the resulting file needs an unlock operation before most tools will work with it further.

Always verify by PCM label, part number, ECU family, and read file. Year, make and model alone is not enough to guarantee support. The same nameplate across two model years can carry different modules, and mid-year running changes are common in this family. What the unlock does — and what it does not

This is the part worth being precise about, because the word “unlock” carries a lot of freight in this industry.

What it does: it takes your read of a protected GPEC2 / GPEC2A module and returns a file your tool can work with — readable, writable, and checksum-correct. It is a door, not a room.

What it does not do: it does not change a single calibration value. It is not a performance tune. It contains no fuel, timing, boost or torque modification, and it is not an emissions modification of any kind. We do not provide emissions defeat, delete files, or services intended to bypass emissions laws — the customer is responsible for confirming legal use in their location and application. That boundary is not decorative. Section 203(a)(3) of the Clean Air Act prohibits tampering with emissions controls and the manufacture or sale of defeat devices, software included, and the EPA has applied that language directly to tuning files. An unlock service that stays on the preparation side of the line is doing so deliberately.

Reading the module: OBD, bench, or boot

Three read methods, in ascending order of effort:

Choosing between bench and boot

For most people the real decision is bench versus boot, and it is worth thinking about before you open a case that did not need opening.

Bench means pulling the module and powering it on a harness outside the vehicle, then reading over its own connector. The case stays closed. Nothing is soldered. If your tool and licence support a bench read on your specific module, this is almost always the right choice — the risk profile is barely worse than an OBD read and the access is far better.

Boot means opening the case and attaching directly to boot pads on the board. It gives the most complete access and carries the most risk: a slipped probe, a lifted pad, or a solder joint that was marginal before you touched it. Boot is the right call when bench genuinely will not reach what you need, and the wrong call when it is simply the method you saw in a video.

A reasonable sequence: try OBD, fall back to bench, and treat boot as the deliberate third option rather than the default. And if two read attempts have already failed, stop — a third attempt by the same method with the same tool rarely produces a different result, and each one adds risk. That is exactly the point at which the mail-in route costs less than continuing.

The order checklist

Nine items. Sending all nine the first time is the difference between a job that clears in minutes and a thread of back-and-forth:

  1. The original ECU / PCM read file
  2. A photo of the PCM label
  3. Vehicle year, make, model and engine
  4. VIN
  5. PCM part number
  6. Which tool produced the read
  7. Read method — OBD, bench, or boot
  8. A plain description of what you need
  9. Confirmation you'll use battery support when writing back

That last item is not a formality. A voltage sag during a write is the most reliable way to turn a working module into a paperweight, and it is entirely preventable with a maintainer that costs less than the shipping on a replacement.

What is the difference between unlock, clone and IMMO-OFF?
An unlock is for a module that is yours and healthy but protected — you need read and write access, and that is the $150 file job. A clone is for a module that is dead when you have a donor — the original's VIN, immobilizer data and configuration are moved onto the donor, at $250 mail-in with both modules required. An IMMO-OFF is for a salvage module whose immobilizer secret is unknown — the check is disabled so the engine will run. Picking the wrong one wastes a week.
