Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram are the only platform where we sell two completely different products for jobs that sound identical on the phone. A $150 GPEC unlock file removes read/write protection so a module can be accessed at all. A $250 remote wiTECH session runs manufacturer software against the car so a module can learn the vehicle. They do not substitute for each other, and one of them has a 24-hour first-time setup window that catches people out on the day they need the car back.

The 24-hour window, explained before it bites you
Mopar is the only platform in our remote programming lineup that carries a first-time setup constraint, and it is worth understanding rather than discovering. Before we can run manufacturer software against your vehicle, your J2534 device has to be registered on our side. That registration takes roughly 24 hours to complete, and it happens exactly once.
Practical consequences:
- First Mopar job:book, supply your device details, and expect the session itself the following day. Booking the slot does not start the clock — supplying the device details does, so do that immediately rather than at the appointment.
- Every job after that: immediate. The earliest bookable slot is thirty minutes out, same as every other platform, 9 AM to 9 PM Central, seven days.
- If the car is a customer's and it is on a lift: do the registration on a slow day, before you need it. A shop that registers once in advance never meets this constraint again.
The Mopar booking page states this on the form itself, deliberately, because a surprise twenty-four-hour delay on a car with the dash apart is the kind of thing that should never be a surprise.
Which vehicles carry a GPEC module
GPEC is the Chrysler powertrain-controller family designation, and our unlock work focuses on GPEC2 and GPEC2A. Other GPEC families — GPEC3, GPEC4, GPEC4LM, GPEC5 — may be supported depending on tool read type, module software, file format and the service requested, which is a deliberately conditional sentence rather than a marketing one.
The vehicles that most often turn out to carry one:
- Dodge— Charger, Challenger, Durango, Journey, Dart, plus Hellcat and Scat Pack / 392 applications.
- Jeep— Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee SRT, Trackhawk, Wrangler JK and JL, Cherokee, Compass, Patriot.
- Chrysler— 300 and 300C, 200.
- Ram— Ram 1500 and HEMI truck applications, plus selected others depending on module family.
Engines in scope run from the 2.0L and 2.4L Tigershark through the 3.2L and 3.6L Pentastar to the 5.7L HEMI, 6.2L Hellcat and 6.4L HEMI / 392.
None of that is a guarantee.Year, make and model alone are not enough — module family, part number, software version, file format and read method all matter. Verify by the label on the module and by the file itself. If you already have a read, the free variant identifier settles it in seconds; if you only have the module in your hand, photograph the label straight-on and in focus before it goes anywhere.
What the unlock does, and what it does not
An unlock removes read/write protection so the module can be accessed. It does not modify calibration, it does not touch the immobilizer, and it is not a tune. It is the step before the work, not the work itself — a distinction our operations decision guide sets out across all seven job types people confuse.
The tell that you need one is usually a read that completes too fast, or returns a file suspiciously smaller than the family should produce. That is the module handing back a protected or partial image rather than refusing outright, which is worse than a clean failure because it looks like success. If you cannot read the module yourself
The instant file service assumes you have a read. Plenty of people do not, and buying a bench tool plus licences for a family you will see once a year is four figures against a job worth a few hundred dollars.
For those cases the mail-in route is $250: you ship the module, we do the reading and the unlock, it goes back. Shops running volume on these families should look at the file packsinstead — the five-file pack works out materially cheaper per unlock than buying singles, which matters once GPEC work becomes routine rather than occasional.
Whichever route: treat the board as electrostatic-sensitive once it is out of the vehicle. Anti-static bag, not a padded envelope.
When the session is the answer instead
Book a session when the module does not need a file at all — it needs the manufacturer software to configure it. On Mopar that covers PCM, TCM and BCM programming, key and immobilizer programming, steering-column-module coding, and calibration updates.
Mechanically: you plug a J2534 pass-through device into the vehicle, a USB-over-network bridge presents that device to our workstation as though it were local, and we run wiTECH against your car while a video call runs alongside so you can watch. Check the device compatibility matrix before booking — an unsupported pass-through is the single most common reason a session cannot proceed, and it is entirely avoidable.
The standard underneath all of this is SAE J2534, which exists specifically so independent shops can reprogram modules using manufacturer software. The National Automotive Service Task Force maintains the industry channel for the service information and vehicle-security credentials that go with it. This is a recognised lane, not a workaround.
Three ways a Mopar job goes sideways
1. Voltage
These vehicles are electrically busy, and a module write is not the moment to find out how tired the battery is. Use a maintainer or a proper supply, not a charger. A write that fails halfway because the voltage walked down turns a routine job into a replacement module.

2. Ordering the unlock when the problem was pairing
A used PCM out of a donor car that cranks but will not start is usually not an access problem. Unlocking it will succeed and change nothing about the symptom. Work the tree in our swapped-ECU guide first — immobilizer pairing is one of six causes, and the others are cheaper to rule out.
3. No original backup
Keep the untouched original read-only with its hash stored beside it, before anything is modified or written. There is no recovery path if you skip this, and the backup guide exists because that lesson is normally learned expensively. Read twice and diff the two files while you are at it; two reads of an untouched module should be byte-identical.
Compliance, stated once and meant
We do not provide emissions defeat, delete files, or services intended to bypass emissions laws. Our services exist for tuning preparation, diagnostics, repair, motorsport, and off-road use where legally permitted. Customer is responsible for confirming legal use in their location and application.
This matters more on the HEMI and diesel Ram platforms than anywhere else in our catalog, because that is where the requests come from. An unlock is access, not calibration, and programming a module so it functions in the vehicle it is fitted to is ordinary repair. Section 203(a)(3) of the federal Clean Air Act addresses tampering with emissions controls and the sale of defeat devices. We decline those requests outright and always will, regardless of the platform or the price offered.
The short version
